LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — North Las Vegas is looking at a blank slate as it considers choices for how to develop 7,000 acres on the north edge of the valley. City officials are seeking public input on what’s needed and what’s wanted.
City Manager Micaela Moore views it as “the art of possible,” and she’s encouraging people — residents and non-residents alike — to take a survey and offer their ideas on priorities for the property. “We want this to be a unique, special place in the valley,” she said.
“Most of it is currently BLM land, but we have the potential to master plan this and really take input from the community what they’d like to see as we vision this area,” Moore said.
With the Desert National Wildlife Refuge on the north, the Nellis Small Arms Range on the east, Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument to the west and the 215 Northern Beltway to the south, it’s an area that eventually will be home to UNLV’s North Campus, planned north of the Beltway between Lamb Boulevard and Pecos Road.
Development along the 215 Beltway is likely to occur first — possibly in the next five years, Moore said.
She said the city is mindful of sustainable growth, working with the Southern Nevada Water Authority to manage needs of a growing population.
Moore said the city could grow by 100,000 residents over the next 15 years.

North Las Vegas is collecting results from the online survey over the next three weeks.
Moore said the city is working with a consultant, and wants it to be an inclusive process involving people across the valley.
Mayor Pamela Goynes Brown talked about the “complete city” concept at her State of the City address, and Moore said that vision is part of emerging plans surrounding growth.
“We’re touching on a lot of it right now, right, with the Job Creation Zone (near the VA Medical Center) and what the mayor said, which is building a medical district. One of her points is we currently don’t have people that are maybe … maybe have North Las Vegas on their birth certificate because we don’t have a hospital that has a maternity ward,” Moore said.
“And so, that’s what she would like to see is that not only are you born here, you grow up here and then you get your career here and you raise your family here … so that you don’t leave,” she said.
